COVINGTON: Two miles from my porch is the town square of the county seat, Covington, GA (pop. 14,000). Covington is where you'll find Newton County Hospital and Library, plus all of the big box stores. General Sherman camped out in this area for an extended period during the Civil War but for whatever reason spared it from his torch. One home in particular was suggested by Margaret Mitchell to David Selznick as the model for "Twelve Oaks." These days, film and TV production is a way of life around Covington. On any given day you're likely to see a vampire falling from the courthouse tower or the like. "The Vampire Diaries'" Mystic Grill is now an actual restaurant on the square.
CONYERS is just a few minutes drive to the west (toward Atlanta) in Rockdale county. Slightly larger than Covington, my favorite destination in the area is the bucolic Monastery of the Holy Spirit where Monks bake, cultivate bonsai, and make stained glass. Conyers also has the Georgia International (Olympic) Horse Park and is yet another busy film/TV production locale with series like "SLEEPY HOLLOW" and "THE ORIGINALS." The nearest cinemas are here with the Carmike Crossroads 16.
